HG-116a Reichs Level
Political Leader (or Ordensburg Staff School Member’s) Visor Cap With Scarce
Flexible Visor
A real intriguing cap piped in the golden yellow cord that identified
the Reichs Level of Political Administration. The light tan colored very fine
ribbed Trikot fabric is in great condition – no mothing of any significance,
and quite clean. The yellow piping is also very good. Though not as yellow as
the usual gold piping, it is super high quality cord. The cap has the standard
post-1938 pattern gilt Political eagle, and Political Leader’s wreath. The
cap’s medium reddish-brown velvet cap band is in fine condition itself -
though there’s evidence of an angled split in the underlying cap band
stiffener and this creates an angular crease in the band on the right side.
Nonetheless, on a head form this would not be especially noticeable since the
tension will straighten out the band to a sufficient degree that the line will
become nearly unnoticeable. The twisted Officer chin cords are in real gold
bullion, toned moderately dark – these are most common on 1939 vintage caps,
sometimes – but more rarely – on later caps, as well if the wearer did not
shift to the required celleon when the regulations changed. The cap has the very
rarely encountered flexible leather visor with a reddish-brown (thin lacquer
coat), which retains a slight gloss. Both visor ends have lost some threads and
are a tad loose as a result, though most of the center portion remains secure.
The visor leather has stiffened slightly over time, but has not warped. The
natural leather sweatband is dark reddish-tan and in very good condition with
only darkening from normal wear and a very small tear at the end of the visor on
one side. The band is marked horizontally in pen with a number sequence on one
side. The gold rayon lining is marked with museum (American or British)
inventory numbers, and on one side with the type of headgear (“German
Political Leader”) hand printed in English. The side lining is in sound
condition, and the cap has a fully intact diamond-shaped moisture shield. It is
about a size 57. Very interesting piece.
