Army Pioneer Officer’s Private Purchase Visor Cap by Ludwig Wörz
This is a great example of a private purchase piece for an Officer, made
of field grey doeskin wool, with a smooth nap. The body has some fairly light
tracking, which can be seen on both the top and sides. There is a half-inch long
section of missing wool where the cap band meets the right side of the cap (I
have photographed this). There are also many small nibbles to the wool
below the cap band, this is mostly noticeable when looking at the interior of
the cap. The cap has a high front
peak and gently sloped sides. The black Pioneer (Engineer) branch piping is in
excellent shape, as is the blue/green badge cloth cap band. The perfectly
matched aluminum insignia is excellent as well, with crisp details to both the
wreath and the Army eagle. The cockade has a red felt bull’s eye. The
Officer’s style chinstrap is fully intact and excellent as well, and is
attached by means of two small silver pebbled aluminum buttons. The lightly
crazed black visor is tightly affixed to the cap, and it has a crosshatched
underside, which is finished in green. The size 55 interior is near excellent
with minor discoloration from use and wear. The green leather sweatband, which
is perforated in the forehead area, has a small tear on the right front. The
underside of the sweatband is stamped with the size in black ink, as well as
being stamped with “2. / Pi. 5.”. This matches the writing on the cloth tag
underneath the moisture shield, which also contains the owners name, “Kästle”.
The green rayon/cloth lining is excellent. The aforementioned moisture shield is
rhomboid shaped clear celluloid and bears the name and address of the
manufacturer in black ink, which is “Ludwig Wörz Militar-Effekten ULM a./D.
Herdbruckerstr. 30”. Also written here is “Stirndruckfrei Deutsches
Reichspatent” which eludes to the forehead stress relief built into the cap
being Nationally patent protected. A quite nice example of a quality, private
purchase Officer’s visor cap!
