HG-121  SA Kepi – Scarce Early Example!
This is the first of these that I have ever encountered, and it is truly an incredible piece! The exterior is all done in a deep tan felt with an almost velvety soft “hand” (‘feel’ in textile terminology) and this type of headgear would have been used only prior to 1934. The construction of the Kepi top follows the same pattern as for the later SA Kepis, with the coffee can shaped top.  It has two enameled air vent grommets along the upper side and has side skirts with a scalloped front and the arm ends secured with a button. It is quite distinctive from the later  SA kepi in that there is no group color.  The entire cap is the same color. There is very little moth tracking to the fabric – only a little area on the left front skirt arm, with a tiny hole in the middle; other than this the fabric is in fine condition. The steel cap ring is in place within the top of the kepi. The front of the piece has a 1929 pattern national emblem with the inset black painted swastika and short, pointed wings. The single, large gilt button has a smooth surface. The Kepi has a reddish-brown leather chinstrap (with a metal connecting ring a the center.  The most impressive thing about this Kepi, however, is that it has a steeply angled, flexible leather visor, painted with reddish-brown lacquer. The glossy surface is now lightly crazed and has some chips to the front edge, but overall the visor – while stiff now – is in fine condition. The cap interior is really nice.  All the components have some version of the reddish-brown color scheme. The natural leather sweatband is fully intact and still supple. It is about a size 57 – but would probably fit up to a 58. The visor underside bears the same reddish-tan lacquer paint as the topside. The top panel has lost some of its original impregnated coating, but is otherwise fine and nicely marked.  There is a circular black ink seal in which I can make out “Landestheater, Gotha Land. Thüringen” and a read stamp reading “Eigentum” ("Property"), with the rest not fully legible.  This terminology possible predates party regulations. A very unique and scarce Kepi from the earliest days of the Reich.
