HG-12a Army Officer Bergmütze
This example is a bit salty but is a scarce cap, nonetheless! It is
made of a nice quality field grey wool (lighter shade). There is light surface
soiling but no damage to the cap body or skirts, but the nap on the short,
crescent-like visor shows heavy wear and the visor’s internal cardboard
stiffener has broken in a number of places, which has contributed to wear along
the front edge of the brim. The crown is piped in aluminum mesh Officer’s
cord, which is textbook applied. Being on the top, it has also suffered wear
from the cap being set down on its top; the piping mesh has frayed around the
front especially, leaving the core of the cord visible. The insignia is set up
as a “T” form, though in fact, the cockade is trimmed and shaped to match
the vertical section of the eagle, and applied beneath it (slightly
overlapping). It is extremely well done, and is practically unnoticeable (final
stitch with knot on the interior). The square tipped skirt arms are secured with
two pebbled aluminum buttons. There is an interesting, very narrow grey cloth
strip (looks like a form of lining material as used on other caps) around the
base of the cap body, just above the visor. The cap is lined in a somewhat olive
tan cotton fabric that is in good condition, but has some staining toward
the top front. There was once a reddish-tan partial leather sweatband, but this
now gone with only traces remaining. This somewhat worn cap is a very nice
example.
