HG-13 Named and Unit Marked Army Mountain Troop
Officers Private Purchase Visor Cap by Jos. Spitzl
This handsome, clean cap is produced in a light shade of feldgrau
wool that is soft to the touch. There are multiple minor nips and areas of
tracking to the top and sides of the cap, don’t discount it because of this,
as there is a lot to like about it! The peak is moderately high, with gently
sloping sides. The green piping, for Mountain Troop personnel, is nearly
excellent. The centerband is produced in a dark green badge cloth and is in fine
condition. The leichtmetall insignia matches very well, with each piece
retaining nearly 100% of its original silver finish. The wreath and cockade are
the one piece version. There is an edelweiss cipher (with gilt stamen) fixed in
between the eagle and wreath. The silver celleon Officer’s chin cord is
excellent, retained to the cap via two small silver finished pebbled aluminum
buttons. The black vulkanfibre visor has some minor fading to the finish and
some minor wear to the front edge but is otherwise just fine. The underside of
the visor is finished in a brownish hue (minor discoloration) and is
crosshatched. The interior is like-new! The upper section is lined in a ribbed
rayon that is finished in a brownish-orange hue. There is a clear celleon,
rhomboid shaped moisture shield that has all of the maker’s nomenclature
written onto it. This indicates the maker was “Jos. Spitzl” of Füssen on
Bahnhofstr. Also seen are the words “stirndruckfrei”, meaning
“pressure-free forehead” and “Deutsches Reichspatent” for “German
National Patent”. Instead of the sides of the cap being lined with a cloth or
rayon, there is a brownish-orange cardboard stiffener. This enables you to
clearly see the crown support (stütze), which is double wrapped in fabric. The
brown leather sweatband is perforated in the forehead area. There is a small
cloth tie at the rear seam. Underneath the sweatband the owner wrote his name in
ink (can’t quite make it out). Stamped underneath is the word “geprüft”,
or “inspected and approved” as well as the Unit the owner was attached to.
This is inside a rectangle and reads “5./G.J.R. 99”. Also seen is the size
of the cap, “57”. An interesting cap that has a lot going for it!
