HG-14 Excellent Documented Army Mountain
Troop Officer’s Private Purchase Visor Cap by “Sporthaus Wild”
Take a look at pages 54 & 55 in the popular book entitled The
Collector's Guide to Cloth Third Reich Military Headgear by Gary Wilkins (BK-19
on our site ). This handsome, clean cap is produced in a light shade of
feldgrau wool that is soft to the touch. There is one tiny area with tracking on
the top of the cap, this is very difficult to see and not at all a distraction.
The peak is very prominent and swept back, giving a handsome look. The green
piping, for Mountain Trooper personnel, is flawless. The centerband is produced
in a dark green badge cloth and is in fine condition. The leichtmetall insignia
matches very well, with each piece retaining nearly 100% of its original silver
finish, having toned just lightly. The wreath and cockade are the one-piece
version. There is an edelweiss cipher (with gilt stamen) fixed in between the
eagle and wreath. The silver bullion Officer’s double chincord is excellent,
retained to the cap via two small silver finished pebbled aluminum buttons. The
black vulkanfibre visor has some minor fading to the finish and some minor wear
to the front edge, but is otherwise just fine. The underside of the visor is
finished in a light brown hue and is crosshatched. The interior is in impressive
condition! It is fully lined in a very soft silk like rayon in a golden hue.
There is a clear celleon rhomboid shaped moisture shield that has all of the
maker’s nomenclature written onto it. This indicates the maker was
“Sporthaus Wild Militäreffekten” of Mittenwald. Also written is the word
“Frischluft” (“Fresh Air”) and patent information (D.R.G.M. 1419757).
The “Fresh Air” concept alludes to the fact that this cap has a series of
six grommetted holes underneath the sweatband and behind the wreath/cockade that
would allow air to circulate throughout the wearer’s head. The book clearly
pictures this unique approach and I have never encountered another visor by this
maker. Speaking of the sweatband, this is a light brown leather example
that is perforated at the forehead (allowing the circulation). It has minor
discoloration from use, but is great otherwise. This cap is a size 55. A
handsome and desirable example, which belongs on the top of the top shelf!
