HG-15  Select Army Panzer Officer’s Extramütze (Private Purchase Visor Cap); Maker Marked
A dashing “EXTRA” model Panzer Officer’s visor cap – though the maker is not easy to identify! The cap has a fine shape with a gently pointed front peak (only a slight angle to the sides) and a firm feel to the wool fabric, which is a fine grade doeskin finished wool. It has vertical, lightly rounded front crown – not as pointy as some, but a very classic shape nonetheless, with sleekly sweeping sides. The light shade of field grey pretty thick, with a very well-shorn nap for an extremely smooth surface feel. There is some light tracking to the wool, and a few nibbles (and a tiny hole or two) to the top panel, with a little tracking under the sides as well; there is also a small hole also to the very center bottom rear of the cap, right above the piping. The bright Panzer pink branch color piping, on the other hand, is in fine condition with only some minor nipping. This piping is made with the later war, almost fluorescent brighteners – which tend to glow orange under a black light, but is totally period (the later war German dyes for bright colors included additives that DO glow). The cap has the slightly narrow diameter aluminum bullion Officer chin cords. The dark blue/green cap band is in fine condition. The insignia is an interesting mix of a clean, aluminum finished eagle and an aluminum bullion wreath (lightly padded) – this latter perhaps being an upgrade from an original metal wreath. It was applied to the band with the bottom edge of the wreath slightly overlapping the lower cap band piping. The low profile nickel cockade has toned quite dark. The visor is nice and secure; the crazing to the lacquer has left little gloss remaining. The cap interior is near spotless with a tan colored visor underside, a wide, tan leather sweatband (approximate size 60!) in outstanding condition, and a medium brown felt-like fabric insert between the cap side and the sweatband. The super pale champagne gold rayon lining has a satiny sheen. There is a full moisture shield. The celluloid is in great condition, the lining beneath shows a pair of silver shield enmeshed in filigree lines; centered in the middle is a stylized trefoil with a small “H” (the maker’s initial, perhaps??). Above the shield, the lining is size stamped “60”. Up under the overhang, there is a penciled “VII” mark. A really sharp example of a high quality Panzer Officer’s visor cap!
