HG-18 Army Transitional Medical Officer’s Extramütze

A handsome cap on the cusp line between the Reichswehr period dark
field grey cap band, and the much darker, Third Reich period blue grey cap band,
this piece is made from a fine quality (though thin-weight), short napped, but
quite smooth doeskin wool. The field grey was originally a fairly light shade,
but overall general soiling has darkened it up a bit. The wide cap band is made
of a slightly deeper, darker field grey with a hint of olive. The deep
cornflower blue piping is excellent condition. The doeskin has some light
tracking spots, a little around the eagle, a spot at the rear of the cap just
above the upper cap band piping, which deepens into a tiny hole. However, cap
exterior overall is very nice, with the band showing faint depression traces
where there is slight wrinkling to the inner cap band stiffener. The insignia is
a handsome early set – the wreath in the thin profile form typical of the
period. The finish is nickel/silver. It is deeply toned. The low-profile
cockade has the middle ring definitely in polished nickel plating. The Officer
twisted chin cords are real silver bullion, which has toned nicely dark, as
well! The visor is in good condition, with very fine crazing to the entire
surface. The underside is a deep yellowish crème color, with a few nicks here
and there. The approximate size 58 natural leather sweatband is tan colored and
about average in width. It has some light soiling from honest wear, and has
split at each corner point of the visor, with one split essentially vertical,
the other running at a an angle back toward the forehead – else all is intact
and in pretty good condition. A glance behind the band at the forehead area does
show evidence of re-stitching at some point. The once peach colored lining looks
to be a cotton/rayon blend. There is a fair amount of soiling and a German
word, or name in a script style, looks to have been written on the top lining in
pen, though it is only partially legible. The diamond shaped moisture shield is
no longer present. All things considered, nonetheless a real fine looking early
transitional Third Reich medical Officer’s cap that will display very well.
