HG-2 Named
Army Infantry Officer’s Private Purchase Visor Cap by Schellenberg
This cap is an example of a private purchase piece for an Officer,
constructed with a high degree of quality materials and workmanship that can be
seen and felt! It is produced in a lighter shade of field grey doeskin wool,
with a smooth nap. The body of the cap has some moderate tracking, which can be
seen throughout including the top and sides. The cap has a moderately high front
peak and gently sloped sides. The white Infantry branch piping is in good shape
overall, with only some light discoloration. The blue/green badge cloth cap band
is excellent, as is the perfectly matched aluminum insignia, with crisp details
to both the wreath and the Army eagle. The cockade has a red felt bull’s eye.
The Officer’s style bullion chinstrap is fully intact and excellent as well,
and is tightly attached by means of two small, grey pebbled aluminum buttons.
The shiny black visor is excellent and rigidly affixed! The crosshatched visor
underside is yellowish-tan. The size 57 interior is near excellent with minor
discoloration from use and wear. The tan natural leather sweatband is perforated
in the forehead area. The underside of the sweatband is stamped with the size
(it says just “7”) in black ink. The GI wrote his name and hometown here as
well, “Van New York”. The gold rayon/cloth lining is excellent! There is a
rhomboid shaped clear moisture shield (small hole, I have photographed this)
which bears the name of the manufacturer stamped in red ink, this reads
“Schellenberg Stirndruckfrei D.R.G.M. Sonderklasse”. A paper tag underneath
the shield has the name of the owner, Hauptmann Gustav Schörner. A great
example of an Officer’s private purchase visor cap!
