HG-2 Army Signal
Officer’s “Extramütze” (Private Purchase Visor Cap); Combined Metal /
Bullion Insignia
This cap has a very nicely shaped top with a high front crown and a
“pinch” to each side. The cap material is a plush quality wool, in a dark
field grey hue. There is some grooved tracking to portions of the top panel,
though mostly in one area, and fabric (the top panel in particular), with one
small hole and a deep gouge ending in nearly a hole – these are noticeable,
but not too distracting. The lemon yellow Signals branch piping has a few minor
nips, but is relatively unscathed. The dark bluish-green cap band is very clean;
however, the maker used a thinner interior stiffener on this cap rather than the
standard pasteboard (instead, it is a stiffened, white textured fabric). This
material offered lighter weight, and a slight increase in flexibility, but over
time, that very flexibility sometimes leads to warping. This cap has a slight
dip in the band at one point – though not especially visible. The insignia is
nice: the eagle in zinc, with a matte aluminum finish; the wreath a nice, hand
embroidered aluminum bullion example with a low profile nickel cockade (made of
Tombak, and showing bronze!). The chin cords are good. The visor is in nice
condition, but has been adjusted (re-applied) at some point and, though very
securely attached (excellent job), the tailor momentarily lost sight of the
“big” picture, and when mounting the visor, it shifted slightly off center
from the cap’s front vertical seam. I'll call this post-war collector
done and be conservative. The approximate size 57 interior has a tan
leather sweatband, which is soiled but in overall quite good shape – and
possibly also re-attached (but again, very nicely). The gold rayon top lining is
in sound condition with moderate soiling (no real stains, just soiling) and has
only the stitch outline of the original diamond-shaped moisture shield (long
gone) still present. I would size this cap is about a 57. Despite the subtly
shifted visor (not immediately noticeable), it has a very sexy shape, and is in
pretty sound condition.
