HG-21 Incredibly Well-Documented and Researched
Army Medical Officer’s Model 1938 “New-Type Field Cap” (i.e.
Overseas / Garrison Cap)
This piece is made of a fairly dark shade of high quality
field grey wool with a nice “hand” (= feel). There is a very small moth nip,
or two, but overall the exterior is in outstanding condition. The cap crown seam
and the top edge of the front scallop are beautifully piped in aluminum mesh
Officer cord. The insignia is a beautiful set of two-piece national eagle and
cockade, with the eagle machine woven in aluminum thread (flatwire) on a dark
green rayon backing, perfectly applied to the cap front, and the cockade is an
Enlisted Man’s machine embroidered style with the extra border tucked out of
sight beneath. There is a wound thread loop positioned at an angle on each side
of the cockade diamond (which were probably intended to secure a cornflower blue
medical soutache to the cap front, and which was either later removed - or
never applied). The interior is lined in brownish-grey cotton, and is somewhat
brown from soiling. The left side is size stamped “56” and has the
handwritten name in blue ink: “Prof. Adickes Berlin Militärärtzliches
Akademie" ("Military Medical Academy, Berlin"). Other than
soiling from honest wear, the interior is in excellent condition. This
outstanding cap comes with a file that includes research (English and German
documents) into the cap’s owner, Dr. Franz Erich Wilhelm Adickes. Spectacular
piece!
