HG-22 Rare Army “Other Ranks” Model 1942
Overseas Cap Converted to a Model 1943 Field Cap
This is an extremely neat cap! This is produced in field grey wool,
which is excellent with just minor discoloration and wear from use. Originally a
Model 1942 cap, this was upgraded “back in the day” to a Model 1943 by the
addition of a visor. It has a two-button front flap, one of the buttons is
missing and thread has been used to hold the flap closed. The button that
remains is pebbled metal with a field grey finish. The hand applied, machine
woven insignia consists of a grey eagle over green and a red/white/black
cockade, also over green. There is a single ventilation grommet on each side of
the cap (obviously not a characteristic of an M43). The interior is fully lined
in gold rayon, which shows some moderate discoloration and minor wear from use.
The lining is stamped with a maker name, Walther C. Tobbi, Warschau (every one
of the “upgraded” caps of this type I have encountered is stamped “Warschau”).
Also seen is the number 54. Interestingly, the side of the lining is stamped
with the size (presumably) of 52. It was probably a left over M-42 that got
revamped. It is a small size, so I think this is correct. An interesting
example is above-average condition overall!
