HG-23a Army Model 1934 Overseas Cap with White
Soutache
Dark field grey wool in very good condition, though the front
shows some wear – the threads on the machine woven mouse grey eagle are worn
(little detail remaining). The white ring on the machine woven cockade is also
worn (or mothed) off. The cap has a white (Infantry branch) soutache, though
this also heavily worn, with the individual threads separating as strands. There
is also a small split in the center seam of the front arm of the skirt, just
below the top edge. The rest of the cap looks pretty good, with very little
mothing of note. The interior is the usual lightly ribbed brownish-grey cotton.
There is some faint white discoloration up in the top area of the cap, which may
perhaps be salt staining from sweat. There are faint traces of stamps remain up
in the top, with the size indicated as “56”, and indications of a possible
maker’s name, which I can’t make out. The bottom edge of the lining is hand
tacked to the cap fabric. Interesting piece.
