HG-23c Army Other Ranks Model 1934 Feldmütze
(Garrison Cap) with Pionier (Engineer) Soutache; Very Early
Made of a very short napped wool, in a quite dark shade of field
grey, the fabric on this approximate size 56 cap is in pretty good overall
condition. There are a few small whitish spots on the fabric – these are not
mothing spots, since the white is actually under the fibers of the wool nap’s
surface, and are not overly noticeable. All are on the left side. There is one
very small moth hole toward the cap rear on the right side skirt. The insignia
is an early style white thread eagle machine woven (BeVo) on a dark green rayon
backing. This is hand applied to the cap – as is the cockade on its dark green
rayon backing. There is a rare, black Pionier branch soutache cord applied in
the correct angle and manner - though hand rather than machine stitched. The
cockade’s diamond-shaped backing is correctly positioned up into and against
the bottom edges of the soutache apex. The cap has an air vent grommet on each
side. It is lined in ivory colored cotton twill lining (usually an indicator of
early production), which shows minimal soiling, but no real wear. Great example
of a scarce and very desirable Pionier branch soutache color.
