HG-25 Army Nachrichtentruppen (Signals)
Officer’s Extramütze (Private Purchase Visor Cap), with Edelweiss
A really cool example, by a maker not often encountered: “VIRO”.
In keeping with private purchase quality, the cover material is a real handsome,
pale grey fabric with nice lines and a nice, high, gently pointed front peak.
The lemon yellow piping is bright and fairly clean, though not without a few
moth nips (one on the left side of the crown piping that shows a glimpse of the
reed core). There are a couple of very light tracking areas on the top panel,
and light soiling all around, but nothing out of the ordinary that would
detract. The cap has a really superb set of mixed insignia with a metal eagle
and an aluminum bullion wire wreath (metal cockade). The eagle is magnificent
– the matte surface nice and bright! The wreath is also excellent, and nicely
padded, with a high profile cockade added. Between the eagle and cockade there
is a very crisp metal (aluminum) cap edelweiss, indicating that this Signals
Officer was assigned to a Gebirgsjäger (Mountain Troop) Unit. The visor has
dulled a bit due to super fine crazing, but is otherwise fine. The approximate
size 56 interior has a reddish-tan Ersatzleder (substitute leather) sweatband,
which is fairly thin. The band material has stiffened up a bit over time, and
there is a vertical split that starts over the right end (as worn) of the visor
and extends upward halfway through the band; other than this, it is all
complete. The cap top has a rust-colored cotton lining with some very light
staining, but no other damage. The side lining is also cotton, but a slightly
lighter shade and more towards a light brown in color. There is a full moisture
shield. On the lining beneath the shield is the distinctive silver maker’s
mark with quad black ovals, and the etiquette “Fabrik-Marke VIRO Gezetzl.
Geschützt”. A very nice looker and a great branch color - Signals
chaps served on the front lines, too.
