HG-2a Dashing Army
Signal Officer’s Extramütze (Private Purchase Visor Cap), by EREL
This cap has a good quality, lightweight field grey wool top (i.e.
thin wool weight) in very nice condition other than for some minimal tracking
and a nip or two. The extremely short nap is even and very soft. The lemon
yellow Signals branch piping is a little over the regulation diameter. There is
some light soiling to the piping and, along the left rear one small kink - but
other than for this it is in excellent shape. The dark blue/green cap band shows
no sign of mothing. A fracture in the pasteboard cap band beneath exhibits as a
slightly visible angled line on the left side, but this will probably be
unnoticeable with the cap on a head form. The insignia is an excellent aluminum
alloy (Leichtmetall) eagle with lightly polished edges – very classy looking!
The wreath is a nice, hand embroidered aluminum bullion example with a little
padding beneath providing a slight arch. The metal cockade has a high profile.
The twist aluminum bullion Officer chin cords are in great condition, in the
slightly narrow diameter version. The right side chin cord button has at least
once been re-positioned (moved slightly rearward). The black lacquer coated
Vulkanfiber has super fine crazing appearing evenly across the entire surface,
and there is a small nick or two, to the edge. The interior shows EREL
construction characteristics. The dark tan visor underside has a noticeable
thumb wear spot and light soiling; the visor seems pretty secure. The wide,
lightly textured, tan leather sweatband shows normal darkening commensurate with
sweat and soiling from daily use. Around the forehead area as viewed from the
rear, the “air cushion insert” portion of the band (i.e. the bottom edge) is
a tad loose along the left corner of the visor, where a few threads have given
away. The interior is lined in gold rayon fabric, which shows light soiling and
staining and, towards the front of the cap, a hole that runs about a quarter
size, along with some “snag” lines. There is a full moisture shield in
place. There was once an EREL logo on the lining, but the heat transfer’s
silver ink over time has separated (or faded) from the fabric, leaving the
remains trapped behind, loose under the celluloid. This cap is about a size 56.
Classic lines, and a desirable branch color!
