HG-33a Navy Officer’s Zweispitzhut (“Two
Pointer Hat”) with Original Box
A.K.A. “Fore and Aft” cap. These hats were only authorized
for wear on formal / official occasions, accompanied by the full galarock
(parade coat), or, with the frock coat in association with visits to foreign
countries and funerals. Let’s start with the cap, which is in excellent,
unissued condition! It has a 4.5 cm (1.75”) wide black moiré pattern ribbon
band (for Officers below Admiral) running from the rear edge, up along the top
and down the front to the end of the bill brim, on each side. On top of the
cap’s flat front and rear bills are the “kordon” (silver bullion tassels)
which end at the brim edges. These have taken on a very dark, handsome patina.
The base and top of the cap are covered in a fine, soft black felt. It has the
National cockade ribbon and a beautifully detailed, gilt Wehrmacht eagle button.
The “agraffe” (draped, spiral gilt cords) are impressive! The interior is as
new, with a white silk lining and a light brown leather sweatband that still
retains the small cloth bow at the rear seam. It is a size 55. The black
cardboard box, which has a shape similar to the cap, is included as well. This
came to us in pieces and we put most of it back together. The cover needs
further repair but it is complete. It would be nearly impossible to upgrade this
excellent example!
