HG-3a   Named Army "Other Ranks" (Enlisted Man/NCO) “Extramütze” (Private Purchase Visor Cap) with Infantry Piping; by EREL
This cap is a nice example of a private purchase EREL piece for an Enlisted Man, made of a very light shade of field grey wool, with a real smooth nap. The cap surface has been fairly heavily tracked, though - despite the many meandering munchings - there is only one (not overly noticeable) hole to the top panel, and a small frayed partial hole on the cap front just below the eagle’s right wing (as viewed). The cap has a moderately high front peak and gently sloped sides. The white Infantry branch piping is in good shape overall, with only some light nibbles. The blue/green badge cloth cap band has light tracking to the sides and a couple of holes through the fabric at the cap rear. Just to the right side of the aluminum wreath insignia there are two small (slightly lumpy) spots – perhaps an attempt to repair small holes by pasting in excess badge cloth fibers? They are not much of a distraction. The aluminum insignia is in fine shape, the wreath relatively low in profile. The cockade is an earlier nickel/silver plated example, which has toned a good bit darker than the surrounding aluminum. The Enlisted Man’s chinstrap is fully intact, but no surface gloss remains and there is some light oxidation to the buckles. The visor has light (minimal) surface crazing. The crosshatched visor underside is yellowish-tan. The very bottom edge of this cap shows a good bit of damage, mostly from mothing, but perhaps also from a little moisture exposure. The tan natural leather sweatband has the distinctive “air cushion insert” pattern construction patented by Robert Lubstein. There is some light fraying damage to the bottom near one temple, and a small piece missing at the very rear. The reverse is stamped in black ink “Geprüft 13. /J.R….” (Inspected, 13th Jaeger Rgt….). The gold rayon top lining has some very light soiling. There is a full moisture shield; the lining beneath bears the EREL-Sonderklasse logo, and the only seldom encountered EREL “Standard” quality grade mark. A cloth label inserted into the moisture shield gives the owner’s name: “Schütze Menkens”  (Rifleman Menkens) and Unit:  “Infanterie Reiterz. J.R. 65”. Definite age wear on this cap - but quite nice nonetheless.
