HG-40 Waffen-SS Other Ranks Model 1943
Einheitsfeldmütze (Standard Field Cap)
More grey than field grey, this great cap is made of sound Other
Ranks quality wool with a decent, short, fluffy nap. There is little sign of any
mothing other than for one pencil point-sized hole in the cap’s top panel. The
wool’s original, deeper dye color is still mostly visible behind the side
skirts, where the color neutering dust and dirt had less access. The skirts
are in good condition, with nicely square ended (two-button) skirt arms. The
pebbled aluminum buttons have lost some of their dark matte grey paint. The cap
has a very nicely applied Enlisted Man’s white machine woven (BeVo) eagle and
Totenkopf (Death’s Head) woven into a trapezoid shaped field grey thread
backing. The visor on this Model 1943 is well rounded, and of a middle length
– not as short as a Bergmütze, but not as long as on some Model 1943’s by
other makers. There are a few deep creases and some rippling in the visor’s
inner cardboard stiffener (not readily apparent without touching the visor), but
no outright breaks that I can discern. The brim’s underside edge has a slight
ridge. The cap interior is lined in a linen-thin, grey cotton lining, which
shows a fair amount of soiling and some minor staining. There is also a small
gap over the left ear / visor edge where the seam threads have given out at some
time. The interior top is also a bit soiled and has a small snag hole in the
lining toward the rear. The top lining is size stamped in black ink, but the
right digit is hardly legible – might be “58”. It fits a size 57 head,
however. There is also “M43”. Overall a really nice outstanding.
