HG-42 Waffen-SS Other Ranks Panzer Model 1943
Field Cap (Einheitsfeldmütze), Dachau-Made
Made of extremely smooth napped, thin black wool – almost the feel
of Melton wool as used on some Navy caps. The fabric used at the Dachau facility
is characteristically lightweight, so that these caps rarely hold their form,
even a little – the cap top invariably sags down. The piece has a two-button
skirt arm, with the buttons being a heavy black bakelite. The narrow green cloth
strips are present underneath the flaps. The exterior is nearly flawless with no
damage of any kind. The cap has all the hallmarks of Dachau production – the
thin, smooth napped fabric, a very nicely applied (saw tooth stitch) trapezoidal
insignia on a black wool/felt backing with the usual Dachau-style,
casual-looking (my opinion) machine embroidered SS eagle and Totenkopf in
silvery-grey thread. The underside of the visor is not covered, leaving the
light brown cardboard exposed. The dark herringbone twill lining is in excellent
condition, with only the slightest hint of wear. This large size example is
stamped inside, noting “59”. A really outstanding example of Dachau
production, in the desirable Panzer black. Great piece, which recently came in
as a result of an article written in the periodical “Bottom Line”, which
mentioned me!
