Fine example of the field grey version of the Waffen-SS Other Ranks
Model 1943. This piece is likely made with captured fabric stocks, and is thus
both rather a greyish color instead of field grey, and the fabric is a gabardine
rather than wool with the napped side visible (the nap on a gabardine fabric is
on the “inside”, not visible to the viewer). The overall exterior condition
is excellent with no visible damage. It has the two button front flap and
these blue painted steel buttons show considerable wear. The cap has a very
nicely machine applied trapezoid insignia in mouse grey BeVo material. The
Totenkopf on this example is the type with a single row of teeth. The interior
is lined in grey ribbed rayon lining. This shows moderate wear and the front
seam of the lining is opened. This made me look very carefully to be sure the
insignia had not been replaced. After this examination, I was comfortable
that the insignia is original. The top is marked “M43” with the size
“57”, both in black ink. A great example of a SS Model 1943 in gabardine
cloth!
