HG-45 Named
Allgemeine-SS Tuchmütze for Enlisted Man/NCO, with RZM Tag
This is just about as nice an example of the black cloth visor cap
that you will ever see! It is produced with a high front peak and sloped sides
that give the cap a very handsome appearance. The black wool fabric (trikot
weave) is in absolutely choice condition, being very clean with no wear or
damage whatsoever. The cap is piped in white cord, with the thicker piping
around the crown and the narrower diameter piping above and below the centerband. The
piping is excellent as well. The nickel/silver finished tombak insignia are fine
examples. The skull and eagle both retain approximately 80% of their
finish. The skull is original to the cap. The eagle that was on the cap was a reproduction,
so I replaced it with a nice, original example. There are two tiny holes in
the centerband in the approximate area of the skull. If these holes went
through the fiberboard, it would bother me. They do not, so I presume the
G.I. may have stuck a few other souvenir pins in this area. This is
not a distraction but I wanted to bring it to your attention! There
is an Enlisted/NCO chinstrap that has some age cracking to it with black side
buttons. The black visor with its hand lacquered surface is nice and tight, with
minor crazing visible. The visor underside is finished in a dark reddish-tan
with a clear RZM SS black ink stamping. The cap interior is absolutely as new!
It has a brownish-orange oil cloth lining. The light brown sweatband (marked
“Deutsches Leder”) overlaps in the back and is secured with an “X”
stitch. The forehead area is perforated to improve air circulation. The
cap has a fine RZM rectangular oilcloth tag under the sweatband with the
Hersteller (maker) code identified as “81”, for Robert Lubstein of Berlin. Also
seen ink stamped underneath the sweatband is “CN 38”. There is a
diamond-shaped moisture shield that is complete with a small paper tag in the
slot, identifying the owner, which looks like “F. Ruhl”. Printed on the
lining beneath, in gold ink, are the circled SS runes. There is also a size mark
(56). Just about as good as it gets!
