HG-51 Amazing Municipal Police Officer’s Tschako
in Original Box, Complete with Horsehair Plume, Cartouche and Cartouche Sash
What an incredible find! This lot includes a Municipal Police
Officer’s Tschako, a Tschako horsehair plume, a cartouche with sash and the
original shipping box it was delivered in! The black leather trim, visors and
black top cover identify this as Municipal (including National) Police. The
Tschako has the standard exterior in tight, Police green wool/felt over the
fiber helmet shell. There is some very minor moth-tracking, but nothing overly
distracting. The upper sides have the two large ventilation holes with mesh
screens. The stamped aluminum eagle is a very crisp, highly detailed Officer
version. All of the silver finish is intact. The separate horsehair plume has a
zinc loop that fits into the slot just above the head of the eagle. The
horsehair is white. The silver aluminum scaled chinstrap is in perfect
condition. The black trim shows the usual age crazing, with assorted nicks and
scratches, as do the visors – but these are very minor. The interior has an
excellent tan leather sweatband with a scalloped top edge, this is embossed with
the motto of the maker. Also seen stamped onto the sweatband is the size,
“56”. There is a gold rayon lining material, this is excellent as well. The
interior top is marked with the large, stylized "EREL" helmet mark –
for a long time Robert Lubstein controlled the license for Vulkanfiber Tschako
production and had become nearly the sole supplier of all the German Police
forces by 1935 (Lubstein invented the fiber Tschako concept). Overall the
Tschako looks to be unused! Next, the sash has a silver aluminum brocade type
face with silver flatwire trim at the top and bottom. A portion of the
blue/green wool underlay protrudes over onto the front top and bottom edge as
well. The sash has pebbled silver fittings which are all excellent. There are
black leather tabs at each end with a hole that attaches to studs on the
cartouche. The cartouche is produced in black leather. It is excellent as well,
remaining soft and supple. There is a handsome, silver aluminum Police insignia
(like the front plate of the shako) on the exterior lid of the cartouche. This
is all contained in an original box which has the recipient’s name and address
on a paper mailing label. The label has the company name “Steiner &
Keller, Köln a. Rh. G.m.b.H.”. There is another label on the lid of the box
which has the number “1283” and “Köln 2”. There is a name hand written
in red ink on the lid as well. The contents of the box still rest in their
original tissue paper. This is a fantastic grouping from both a condition and
desirability standpoint!
