HG-51 Rural Police Feld Gendarmerie Extramütze
(Private Purchase Visor Cap), by Peter Küpper; Possible Officer Upgrade from
Other Ranks
This is a very interesting example of a Police Officer’s cap with
the two sometimes encountered meshed air vent grommets on each side under the
overhangs. The cap is made of dark-hued Police green wool in a very average
grade with a somewhat coarse (and slightly “hairy”) appearance. The cap’s
form is definitely indicative of private purchase, though the wool is only
slightly better than the usual Other Ranks quality. The oval top panel drops off
smartly down to the rear of the cap and gives the cap with its fairly high front
peak a sharp look. The cap is nicely piped in orange cord that identified the
wearer as a Policeman serving at the rural (countryside) “Gendarmerie” level
– or else in the field as Military Police (Feld Gendarmerie). There are a few
nibbles, with a small spot on the right side cap crown piping where the piping
core (fine gauge wire) is visible. The cap band is a fine quality medium brown
felt. A nice set of Officer twisted aluminum chin cords and pebbled aluminum
buttons suggest that this cap’s owner probably upgraded it to an Officer
level, upon promotion – though he did not at the same time upgrade his
Enlisted Man’s quality Police eagle insignia. The Schirm (visor) is in pretty
good condition with no real scrapes or scratches of any note. The visor
underside is a dark olive green. The very wide, dark reddish-tan Ersatzleder
(substitute leather) sweatband is in pretty good condition (nothing but a couple
of small ticks on the forehead area) and complete with a full circumference
black velvet insert between the bottom edge of the band and the cap – a
characteristic of Peter Küpper (Peküro) construction. The rust colored chintz
(oilcloth) lining is in very nice condition with a complete moisture shield. The
lining beneath is embossed with a silver ink transfer (little ink remains):
“Peter Küpper Wu.-Ronsdorf” with below this the typical
“Stirndruckfrei” and “Deutsches Reichspatent” notices (textbook Küpper
phrasing). A real solid cap!
