HG-58b Luftwaffe Other Ranks Model 1943
“Standard Field Cap” [Einheitsfeldmütze]
Fine example in about a size 57 made of good quality fliegerblau
(blue/grey) wool with a fairly soft, slightly fuzzy nap. The exterior is in very
good condition, with hardly any tracking, and only some slight general soiling.
The skirt arms are the usual square-ended style with two small, greyish blue
painted, pebbled aluminum buttons. The visor is well-rounded, with a thick brim
ridge on the upper side. There is some light rippling to the cardboard
stiffener, but nothing that detracts. The cap has the common two-piece pattern
Luftwaffe insignia with a fine machine embroidered Luft eagle in greyish-white
thread and a separate machine woven national cockade (not often do you see an
insignia mix of woven and embroidered) applied as a diamond – but with the top
rounded so as not to overlap more than the very bottom of the swastika. The
excellent condition lining is silvery-grey rayon with only the slightest sign of
wear. It is marked with a RB number and the date 1944, as well as the size. The
side flaps have the short rayon loops on the inner bottom edge. All in all, a
real handsome piece in highly collectible condition – hard to find these days.
