HG-69  Luftwaffe Officer’s Private Purchase Summer Cap (Sommermütze)
White topped peaked cap, which was permitted for use from April 1st through September 30th as part of the Luftwaffe summer uniform. Often, it was also worn by Officers with the blue/grey Tuchrock, Waffenrock, and even the Fliegerbluse. This is a two-piece cap, with a top that is removable for cleaning purposes. There is moderate discoloration to the top, with many small brown spots, but is sound overall. There is no piping on the top of the cap (per regulations), what looks like white piping is just a raised seam. The 1.75” wide black center band is perfect, with bright silver bullion piping on both the top and bottom edge. Just below this you will see the bottom section of the body, which is actually in the standard Luftwaffe blue/grey Trikot wool. There are a few minor moth nips around this section but these are very minor. The removable Luftwaffe eagle and swastika are in silver bullion, with bright silver highlights, the main body of the eagle is moderately corroded. The background is a white felt. The wreath and cockade are silver bullion with bright silver highlights over a black felt background which contains two tiny nips (just above the upper right section of the wreath), otherwise it is excellent! The Officer’s style chincord is affixed to the cap by two grey painted pebbled buttons, it is excellent as well. The Vulkanfiber visor is fairly matte in appearance, with a glossy trim sewn to the brim. The visor’s underside features the standard green color with crosshatching. It has a tan sweatband that is torn in a few places but complete. It is fully lined with a yellow satin material, and has a rhomboid moisture shield of clear celluloid material. In silver ink, written on the moisture shield, is the supplier’s information. It reads “Verkaufsabteilung der Luftwaffe Berlin S W 68 Puttkamerstr. 16-18 Erstklassig” or Sales Department of the Luftwaffe, their address, and first class. This would have been privately purchased under the auspices of the Luftwaffe, which might include the individual would have had a deduction taken from their monthly paycheck to pay for this. The moisture shield also contains a small piece of paper with the size (57 ½) written on it. The size is also indicated on a paper tag that is affixed to the rear of the cap, right where ends of the sweatband meet. Overall excellent example of a scarce cap!
