HG-69a Luftwaffe “Other Ranks” Private
Purchase Summer Cap (Sommermütze) for Flight/Paratrooper Personnel
This white topped peaked cap was permitted for use from April 1st
through September 30th as part of the Luftwaffe summer uniform. Its top is
removable for the purposes of laundering. Often, it was worn with the blue/grey
tuchrock, waffenrock, and even the fliegerbluse. There is the usual moderate
discoloration to the top, with a large light brown stain, but is sound overall.
There is no piping on the top of the cap (per regulations), what looks like
white piping is just a raised seam. The 1.75” wide black centerband is
perfect, with yellow piping on both the top and bottom edge. Just below this you
will see the bottom section of the body, which is actually in the standard
Luftwaffe blue/grey trikot wool. The leichtmetall insignia consists of an early
pattern “droop tail” Luftwaffe eagle and the (one-piece) winged wreath with
cockade. The finish remains excellent on each of these! The “Other Ranks”
chincord is affixed to the cap by two small, black finished buttons, it has some
moderate wear to the finish. The black leather visor has some minor crazing and
a white smudge on the finish. The visor’s underside is black as well. The
visor has been re-sewn at some point, this was nicely done and isn’t obvious.
We believe that the cap has been “reblocked” at some point as well. It has a
tan sweatband that is torn in a few places but complete. The sweatband has a
pair of small metal medallions with what we assume would be the owners initials,
“F H”. The interior is fully lined with a yellow satin material, and has a
rhomboid moisture shield of clear celluloid material. In gold ink, written on
the moisture shield, is the manufacturer’s information which indicates it was
produced by the firm of “Kierteis Söhne” of Fürth. The moisture shield
also contains a small piece of paper with the size (58) stamped on it. A sound,
representative example overall and priced to be tantalizing!
