HG-7a Interesting Army Cavalry Officer’s Private
Purchase Cap with Hussar Tradition Badge
This private purchase example is produced in a fine quality wool in a
medium shade of field grey. There is some moderate staining to the rear of the
top, otherwise the body checks out just fine. The peak is moderately high, with
gently sloping sides. The golden yellow piping, for Cavalry personnel, is
excellent. The centerband is produced in a dark green badge cloth and is in fine
condition. The leichtmetall insignia matches very well, with each piece
retaining nearly 100% of its original silver finish. There is a small
indentation to the top of the eagle’s left wing, this is minor but worth a
mention. The wreath and cockade are the one-piece version. There is some minor
toning to the finish of each. There is a Hussar Tradition Badge (Totenkopf)
fixed in between the eagle and wreath, this cool feature looks to be produced in
bronze and has been on the piece forever. The silver bullion Officer’s double
chincord is excellent, retained to the cap via two small silver finished (and
lightly toned) pebbled aluminum buttons. The black vulkanfibre visor has some
minor fading to the finish and some minor wear to the front edge but is
otherwise just fine. The underside of the visor is finished in a light brown
hue. The top of the caps interior is finished in a reddish-brown rayon that
shows lots of wear and tear. The words “stirndruckfrei” meaning
“pressure-free forehead” and “Deutsches Reichspatent” for “German
National Patent” are silkscreened in silver ink on the lining. Instead of the
sides of the cap being lined with a cloth or rayon, there is a brownish-orange
cardboard stiffener. This enables you to clearly see the crown support (stütze)
which is double wrapped in fabric. The brown leather sweatband is perforated in
the forehead area. There is a small cloth tie at the rear seam which has torn
loose from one side, there is some minor discoloration to the sweatband as well.
It is approximately a size 55. An interesting example in very sound condition
overall!
