HG-96a RAD Officer’s Private Purchase “Robin
Hood” Cap
This style cap earned the distinctive, collector-coined term “Robin
Hood” cap because of the similarity with to headgear worn by Robin’s merry
followers. It is made of fairly rigid, formed compressed felt in a slightly
smoky brown color. The top of the cap was made to take a slight “U” shaped
dip, like a civilian Fedora. The top has air vent grommets on each side. Around
the front of the cap body is a 2” high dark brown cap band with the ends sewn
to the cap body about midway around the sides. At the front center of the band
there is a handsome nickel/silver enameled RAD insignia (about 1.75” wide from
wheat sprig tip to wheat sprig tip and just over 1.5” high). The cap’s side
skirts are nearly 2.75” high, their top edges trimmed in a bright silver
aluminum piping. The visor itself is slightly downward slanted, nice and firm
– and in perfect condition. About 2” inward from the brim runs a curving,
horseshoe-shaped line of flat, aluminum braid piping; the ends meet the cap
body. The size 56 interior is lined in a black cloth, and contains an oval
moisture shield. The tan leather sweatband, which is perforated in the
forehead area, and has the manufacturer’s information and logo, which reads
“Original Ausführung, Carl Starkloff, Leipzig C1, Martin-Luther Ring 3”,
all inside a banner. There is a rectangular compartment which has a paper tag
containing the size. Underneath the sweatband you will see the manufacturer’s
information repeated in a black ink stamp. A highly collectible example in
excellent condition!
