HG-98a Scarce and Desirable Hitler Youth
Leader’s Visor Cap
A great looking cap that is produced in a soft, light brown wool with
a trikot weave. There is a minor amount of discoloration on the top of the cap,
and a few small holes as well. There is a high, swept back peak with sides that
gently slope down to the rear. The owner removed the steel ring stiffener on the
inside of the cap so this has the look and feel of a crusher type cap; very
cool! The cap is piped in an Officer’s type silver aluminum mesh that is
excellent and fully intact. This silver piping would identify the wearer as
having a rank from Stammführer to Hauptbannführer. The black velvet centerband
is excellent as well! The zinc eagle, referred to as the third (1939) pattern,
retains 80% of its original silver finish, a good solid amount. The enamel
Hitler Youth diamond is perfect! The Officer’s style silver bullion chincords
are tightly affixed to the body of the cap by a pair of pebbled, silver finished
buttons. The black vulkanfibre visor has some minor crazing and a few chips in
the finish but is otherwise sound. The underside is finished in a
brownish-orange hue and has light crosshatching. The size stamped 56 interior is
fully lined in a dark tan colored ribbed rayon that has some minor discoloration
throughout. The celluloid moisture shield is missing. The light brown leather
sweatband is complete and near excellent (small tear at the back) with only
minor discoloration, it has a white cloth tie at the rear seam. Underneath the
sweatband is an RZM tag which indicates the hersteller (maker) number is
“4”, indicating the cap was produced by Clemens Wagner of Braunschweig. A
very solid example of a scarce and desirable cap!
