H-203 Excellent German Production Model 1916
“Identified” Camouflage Helmet
This interesting helmet reads “Cambria Drive Nov. 20-17 “ in orange on
the back. The Battle of Cambrai, which was initiated on November 20, 1917, was a
British offensive meant to break through the German Hindenburg line (read all
about it here: wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Cambrai_(1917)).
I have now carefully reexamined the helmet and concluded that the paint used in
the lettering on the back is the same as a small section on the front right side
of the helmet. Therefore, it must have been a British soldier, proud as punch,
about the initial tremendous success on the 20th of Nov 1917 that captured this
helmet and really did it up as a souvenir. A real piece of history. This
great helmet features a wild multi-color camouflage finish, in addition to the
writing on the back. The colors are green, yellow, blue, orange and brown over
the original dark green combat finish. The camouflage finish remains 90% intact
throughout. Inside, the original three pad leather liner with leather linerband
is intact. The pads show moderate wear but still retain most of their padding
material. The side of the interior is stamped “ET 66”, indicating production
by Eisenhuttenwerke of Thale in the size of 66. A buckle for the chinstrap is
included. An excellent example, untouched and a great conversation piece.
