H-228 Interesting Model 1940 Luftwaffe
Single Decal Combat Helmet
This excellent example retains 98% of its Luftwaffe blue/grey combat
finish! There are a few white marks in the finish, these are not distracting,
though. The Luftwaffe adler is approximately 85% intact, the right (left
as viewed) wing accounting for most of the missing amount. Here is one
interesting part! The owner (or collector) hand painted a tri-color shield on
the opposite side, making this a unique “Double Decal” Model 1940! It
is very nicely done, with the correct shades of red, white and black. It makes
it almost believable but I still think it was done by a collector and will be
pricing it accordingly. Moving to the inside, the light brown leather
liner, size stamped 56 in black ink, is near excellent with very minor scuffing
only. When the liner manufacturer stitched the two ends together, they extended
the thread through an open area between two tongues. They then stitched the
thread through a tongue and left a long strand hanging loose. This has held up
for all of these years, interestingly enough! There is a full-length drawstring,
and a non-reinforced zinc liner band, as well. The shell is stamped, on the
interior side, Q 64, indicating this was manufactured by Quist in shell size 64.
To top it off, there is a very nice black leather chinstrap, manufacturer marked
and dated ’41. An overall excellent example with a few interesting
characteristics that set it apart from others!
