H-280 Named Luftwaffe Model 1940 “Zimmerit”
Camouflage Helmet
Quite the interesting stahlhelm we have here for you!
Starting life with a blue/grey finish, which is still visible in many areas, the
owner added a camouflage finish using the anti-mine material zimmerit,
carefully applying it around the Luftwaffe eagle. The zimmerit finish
is seen on approximately 80% of the exterior of the helmet, and the decal
remains a solid 65% intact. Inside, a brown leather, size 56 liner is
seen, complete with drawstring. This has some minor discoloration and
scuffing/age cracking. Two names are seen written onto the liner (I have
photographed these). The liner band is a reinforced aluminum example which is
size and maker marked, as well as dated 1940. The side of the interior is
stamped “SE 64”, indicating production by Sachsische Emaillerwerke of Lauter in
the size of 64. The rear of the skirt is stamped with the steel lot number of
5003 making this an early 1940’s production example. There is a brown leather
chinstrap (slightly shortened) with aluminum fittings as well. Intriguing to the
max!
