H-283b Model 1942 Army Single Decal Helmet with
Chicken Wire, From the Collection of John Burnett
This desirable helmet has a dark green combat finish that remains a
solid 75% intact. There is minor surface rust on both the shell and the full
basket of chicken wire that the soldier added for camouflaging purposes. The
chicken wire has minor damage to the right side, as viewed. The Army decal (of
ET production) remains a solid 75% intact as well. Inside, the brown leather,
size stamped 58 liner is soft and supple. There is minor wear and discoloration
and some minor damage to two of the liner tongues. There is a drawstring and a
non-reinforced zinc linerband, which is maker, size and date stamped. The rear
of the skirt is stamped “ckl 66”, indicating this was produced by
Eisenhuttenwerke of Thale in the size of 66. The rear of the skirt is also
stamped with the steel lot number of 3838 (hard to read), indicating production
some time in 1943. A sound brown leather chinstrap with metal fitting is
included as well. A great example of this type!
