H-284a Excellent Model 1940 Wehrmacht Wire
Camouflage Helmet with Cool G.I. Personalization
This handsome helmet is enhanced by the addition of a wire, which
would have served as a spot to add twigs, sticks, leaves etc. for camouflaging
purposes. This thin galvanized wire is firmly secured to the chinstrap “D”
rings. In addition to going around the circumference of the helmet just where it
begins to flare, it also goes over the top of the shell. The dark green
combat finish on the helmet is nearly fully intact (97%!), with only a few
scuffs present. Even some of the rough texture is intact. The interior features
a brown leather liner that has minor discoloration and scuffing from use. It is
size stamped 58 and has a drawstring. Also seen, written on both the liner and
the skirt of the shell, is the name and full address of the G.I. who brought
this helmet home. His name is Lucian Morrison and he resided in San Antonio,
Texas. The linerband is a non-reinforced zinc example that is maker and size
marked as well as dated, 1943 (late). It is well known that Quist continued
production of Model 1940 helmets until very late in the war, and here is a great
example of that! Solidifying its late production is the fact that the maker
stamp is seen at the rear of the skirt, just above the steel lot number. It
reads “Q 66”, indicating that it was produced by the firm of Quist in the
size of 66. The steel lot number is “S1448”. A textbook example in near
excellent condition overall!
