U-067 Scarce Waffen-SS Sturmbannführer (Major)
Private Purchase Service Tunic and Breeches
This fantastic offering includes the service tunic, breeches and
suspenders for a Waffen-SS Sturmbannführer, equivalent to the Field Grade
Officer Rank of Major. It is produced in a high- quality, field grey wool that
is near excellent with minor wear and moderate discoloration. This is lightly
padded for warmth, with pads at the shoulders as well. There are four pleated
pockets with scalloped flaps (these have the look of the early Austrian “bat
wing” type pocket flaps). There is a six-button closure; all buttons are
pebbled with a grey finish. There are two hook and loop fasteners at the neck.
The sew-in shoulder boards have matte silver flat wire woven into five braids
over white badge cloth. The underlay is of a black badge cloth. The dark green
wool collar shows very minor wear and discoloration. The right side has a
handsome runic tab with hand embroidered silver flat wire runes over black wool.
The left side Rank tab has four silvered metal pips. Each has a silver bullion
twist rope piping and has been hand applied to the collar. The second button
loop from the top has ribbons for both the War Merit Cross 2nd Class and the
Iron Cross 2nd Class. There are loops on the left breast pocket for four awards,
as well as loops above for a large medal bar. The left sleeve has a drop-dead
gorgeous SS sleeve eagle produced in silver bullion with bright silver flatwire
highlights over black wool. There is moderate powdering (corrosion) on the
breast feathers of the eagle. It has been hand applied to the sleeve. The
interior is fully lined in green rayon and shows minor wear and discoloration.
There is a single pocket on the left side that has a partial tag inside; the
name has been removed but the tailor’s information is still there. It is dated
1944. There is a tailor tag at the neck, indicating this was produced by the
firm of “F. Steiner” (Ferdinand, according to the tag in the pocket) of
Babenhausen (Bayern, or Bavaria). The tunic is a size 38. The breeches are of a
very high-quality in both material and manufacture. They are produced in green
ribbed cloth, which has minor visible discoloration and wear only. There are
slash type pockets at the hips and two rear pockets with scalloped flaps (one
button missing). There are cloth ties at the bottom of each leg closure. There
is a three-button (zinc) fly with a metal hook and loop (hook marked “The
Eagle Hook”) at the waist. All of the buttons (Bakelite) and straps are
present for the suspenders, of which a beautiful set is included. There are
cinch straps at each hip with blue metal buckles. The pocket bags and waist
reinforcement are produced in off-white heavy-duty cloth. The breeches have a
size 32 waist. A very scarce find, and in near excellent condition overall!
