U-080 Spectacular! Near Complete Gau Level
Political Leader’s Ensemble (Rank of Gemeinschaftsleiter); Four Pieces
This is a rare opportunity to secure a nearly complete uniform set
for a Political Leader at the Gau Level of Political Administration, complete
with 4th pattern Gemeinschaftsleiter collar tabs, and a magnificent brassard
indicating a duty assignment as the “Leiter einer Stelle” (“Leader of a
Post”). I am going to describe each piece in only cursory detail –
we’ll let the pictures do most of the talking! The ensemble includes: a Tunic,
Breeches, Political Leader’s belt and buckle (reddish-brown wide leather belt
with gilt finished, round parade buckle) with cross strap, Neck Tie and
Political Leader’s Visor Cap with Gau Level piping and gilt insignia...details
follow! TUNIC: Fine, light grade mustard brown Trikot
(gabardine) wool fabric, in about a size 36; it’s piped in wine red cord (Gau)
around the front and bottom edges of the collar, with a nice set of (slightly
wrinkly) Gau Level collar tabs for the pay grade of Gemeinschaftsleiter and an
excellent, dark red piped armband indicating the position of “Post Leader”
(“Leiter einer Stelle”) at Gau Level. The left side of the tunic has two
loops above the breast pocket for a single ribbon bar, and two loops (heavily
worn) on the pocket pleat for a badge, or medal. The right shoulder has a
Political Leader’s button at the shoulder seam and a special attachment pin,
which together hold a very scarce Political Leader’s aiguillette cord in gold
celleon braid with gilt finished tips (some gilding missing)! The tunic is in
nice condition with no noticeable mothing, though there is some minor soiling
– tiny spots here and there, and the backside of the left cuff is quite dark
soiled and a little glazed from rubbing over something (maybe a little ink from
a paper on a desk!). The tunic interior is lined in copper colored rayon, with a
brown oilcloth RZM tag on the inside of the pocket. BELT, BUCKLE and CROSS
STRAP: All set up, with the cross strap attached. The belt is a
nice, solid example with minor scuffing marks and some light stress cracks.
There is minor soiling, but nothing significant. The inner side of the belt is
marked with the size “100” at the tip; with the buckle prongs in the last
set of eyelets, however, this belt will fit up to about a 30” waist
comfortably. The cross strap is in good condition, though the leather is cracked
across the rivet point on of the loops. Most of the gilt finish still present on
its fittings. The buckle is RZM marked, with the maker “M4 / 24”. NECK
TIE: this is in excellent condition, the only thing lacking being the
RZM label. VISOR CAP: the ribbed Trikot wool exterior is in great
shape – clean, and no visible mothing; it has a very nice saddle shape, 99% of
the gilt finish on the eagle and wreath insignia. The silver ring on the
cockade is toned. I believe the wreath and cockade is a period
replacement. It has perfect wine red Gau Level piping. The chin cords are
real gold bullion, not celleon, and have toned a bit dark over time. The visor
has a few nicks and marks, but is pretty good – though a tad loose where one
corner secures inside the cap. The approximate size 58 interior is lined in
clean gold rayon, with a full moisture shield. The very thin reddish-tan leather
sweatband is somewhat damaged, with a portion or two missing, but everything
else is sound. There is a brown oilcloth RZM tag (maker number 714) behind the
sweatband on the left side. Overall a sharp looker! BREECHES: great
set, likely for someone standing about 5’8” tall and with a waist of about
32” at the most, with no visible mothing anywhere, and no noticeable soiling.
The super fine ribbed Trikot wool fabric is in excellent condition (a tad darker
in shade than the tunic color), and the small horizontal waist level fit
adjustment straps on each side still have the blue anodizing on the buckles! All
the waist suspender and fly closure buttons are present, and all the calf slit
buttons – though a few of these are replacements. The waist lining fabric is
not a plain colored cotton fabric, which suggests to me a private purchase pair.
Overall, a really super ensemble needing only the shirt and a pair of boots to
complete!
