U-102 Handsome Restored Luftwaffe Artillery
NCO (Oberfeldwebel) Service Tunic
This is a four-pocket service tunic that is produced in a Luftwaffe
blue/grey wool that has some minor discoloration. There is some minor wear as
well as one or two small nips that are hard to spot. There are five buttons for
the closure, each is a silver finished pebbled aluminum example. These match the
buttons used for the four pockets which are pleated with straight flaps. The
cuffs are turn back. The collar is piped with what appears to be the brown cloth
twist cord (Signals). It has a silver NCO aluminum tress on the front and
lower section of the collar. Also seen are a set of tabs, which are produced in
a red badge cloth and have four metal gulls each. These are machine applied but
I believe collector-done. The sew-in shoulder boards have a continuous tress
around the entire perimeter. There are two silver metal pips on each, over a
blue/grey wool facing. The piping is red. These characteristics tell us that the
wearer was of the Senior NCO rank of “Oberfeldwebel”, which is basically
equivalent to a Master Sergeant, assigned to an Artillery (Flak) Unit. These are
also nicely applied, but a very close examination makes us believe the interior
liner was opened up at one time. The left side (wearer’s) shoulder board has a
slide on device produced in blue/grey wool that has the script “R 79”
machine embroidered in a red cloth chain stitch. The original to the tunic
breast eagle is machine embroidered in a silver/white cloth thread over a blue/grey
wool backing. This has been hand applied above (and slightly over) the right
upper pocket. The left lower sleeve has a round qualification badge, indicating
this NCO successfully completed his Ordnance training. It has two crossed
cannons in silver bullion with an aluminum twist cord piping and has been hand
applied. There are badge loops on the left breast pocket, these appear to have
been collector applied. There is also a set of loops for a medium sized ribbon
bar. The second button hole from the top has a ribbon indicating the owner had
earned the Iron Cross 2nd Class. The interior is fully lined in a green (field
grey) cloth which shows some minor discoloration from use. There is a large
pocket on the wearer’s left side and a small one (for the first aid kit) on
the lower right. A pair of cloth strips is present for the belt hooks. The left
side is well-marked with the maker’s name (Assmann Halle), the size
information and “LBA 39”. This is the acronym for
“Luftwaffenbekleidungsamt” or “Luftwaffe Clothing or Equipment Issue
Depot” and the year of manufacture, 1939. It is approximately a size 36-38. A
sound service tunic and priced accordingly!
