U-108 Luftwaffe FlaK Enlisted Man’s Four-Pocket
Service Tunic, Mint, Unissued with Paper Tag
Opportunities to acquire an unissued uniform are pretty scarce, but
here at The Ruptured Duck, we do come across nearly everything at some point or
another! This approximate size 36 piece is a beauty, in good, Enlisted
Man’s quality fliegerblau (greyish-blue – ‘flyer’s blue) wool, with a
nice “hand” (‘feel’ in textile terminology). The tunic is absolutely
textbook construction and complete with blank, red backed collar tabs (FlaK
Artillery branch), and a collar perfectly piped in twisted red cord. The
shoulder area has the buttons for the shoulder boards but none were ever
installed. The way the shoulder is set up, these would have been of the
slip-on variety. There are no thin wool strips for the slip-on type
boards. Early tunics with the piped collars tended to have the sew-in type
boards. There is no trace of mothing anywhere on the tunic – it’s in
mint, unissued condition, and even has the remnants of a tan paper stock tag
(originally from the sleeve) tucked into one of the pockets. The tunic has a perfect Enlisted Man’s
embroidered breast eagle in white thread. The interior is fully lined in the
usual greyish-blue cotton twill cloth, nicely size marked on the left front breast with the stamp “Bulag 39”
indicating a consortium maker and date. Super piece.
