U-120 Army NCO (Feldwebel) Artillery Transitional
Walking Out Dress Tunic, with Marksmanship Lanyard, and “408” Ciphers
This Artillery Oberfeldwebel tunic is a really handsome piece in
about a size 36. The fabric is extremely fine Trikot wool – which even has a
very short nap! The sew-in shoulder boards have full woven NCO tress, in
excellent condition and nicely piped in Artillery red; each board has a pair of
bright aluminum alloy (Leichtmetall) pips - though these are not all matched.
The rank is for a Hauptfeldwebel. Between the pips on each board there is a set
of Unit ciphers “408” in lightly toned metal. The tunic collar in
bluish-green badge cloth is also in excellent condition, nicely bordered with
woven aluminum lamè NCO tress. The collar tabs are very impressive –
definitely private purchase quality in silver lamè cloth (rather than the less
expensive aluminum)! Over time, they have taken on a nice dark tone against the
brilliant red Artillery facings. The Artillery red closure piping is in
excellent condition. The breast eagle is Officer quality hand embroidered
aluminum bullion specimen! A Grade One marksmanship lanyard (with a second
pattern planchette) is attached by a loop to a button under the right shoulder
board. There is some light fraying to the aluminum braid along one side, but
nothing distracting. Each breast pocket has a slightly downward angle. The left
breast shows a single set of loops on the pocket for a medal or badge. The tunic
interior is fully lined in a rayon/cotton blend smooth grey fabric, with some
light soling to the shoulder area for a faint brownish cast there, and the
outline of a removed tailor tag just below the collar. There is a small hole
just above the waist on the left side, but it is otherwise in great shape. It
comes with the commonly encountered waist cinch belt and there is a nicely
tailored slit at the pocket level for a dagger hanger strap. A very nice example
for a senior NCO!
