U-158 Excellent Stahlhelm Tunic with Collar
Tabs
A very seldom-encountered type of tunic, made of a heavy weight, but
high quality and very soft napped wool in a greenish shade of field grey. The
tunic is large - about a size 40 L – perhaps even a 42. There is some light
tracking, which is very unobtrusive. I didn’t notice any holes. The tunic
collar is the same fabric as the rest of the garment, and has a pair of
rhomboidal black felt large collar tabs applied, one per side. These measure
nearly 3.5” in length. The tabs are piped in white cord. In the lower front
corner of each there is a metal rank insignia consisting of two small oak leaves
and an acorn. The metal has a nicely toned nickel/silver finish. The breast
pockets are pleated with scalloped flaps; the waist pockets are offset toward
the tunic sides and hidden (i.e. internal), with only the downward angled
(toward the rear) scalloped flaps showing on the exterior. The tunic has a
six-button front closure, each button with the molded-in Stahlhelm helmet image.
There are loops above the left breast pocket for use with a ribbon or medal bar.
Included on the lower corner of the left breast pocket is a WWI Black Wound
Badge (nice condition). The tunic’s upper right sleeve has a very nice machine
embroidered sleeve shield affixed, with “Bayern” (Bavaria) in white across
the top section, a crown, and the Bavarian blue and white checkerboard colors.
The tunic rear has double vent slits, with a belt ramp button above each corner
for holding a belt. The garment interior is fully lined in a dark bluish-grey
cotton fabric, in absolutely excellent condition. The sleeves are also lined,
but with an off-white striped material. Fine tunic!
