U-159 Choice Stahlhelm Tunic
Seldom-encountered type of tunic, this piece is made of heavy weight
but high quality and very soft napped wool in a greenish shade of field grey.
The tunic is about a size 36. There is some light tracking, which is very
unobtrusive. I didn’t notice any holes. The tunic collar is the same fabric as
the rest of the garment. The breast pockets are pleated, with scalloped flaps,
while the canted waist pockets are hidden (i.e. internal) and offset toward the
tunic sides (only the scalloped flaps show on the exterior). The tunic has an
eight-button front closure, each grey painted button displaying the molded image
of a 1916 steel helmet. There are loops above the left breast pocket for use
with a ribbon or medal bar. Attached through the left breast pocket flap’s
buttonhole and its bottom edge is a nice Hindenburg Cross ribbon. The tunic’s
upper right sleeve has a spectacular machine woven sleeve shield affixed, with
the region named at the top “L.V. Westmark” in white, and on the shield, a
gold crown above a really sharp-looking Imperial eagle on a background of
horizontal national colors bars: black / white / red. The tunic rear has double
vent slits, with a belt ramp button above each corner (for holding a belt).
There are two pebbled, plated metal belt hooks in place. The tunic interior is
fully lined in a dark brown cotton/twill fabric (the sleeves in white) and is in
excellent condition. A really nice piece!
