Imperial German Bavarian Model 1889 Cavalry Sword "Kgl. Bay. Chevaul. Rgt. Herzog Carl Theodor"-This 38-inch (96.52cm) sword is a beauty. It has a heavy-duty nickel silver half-basket hilt with the Bavarian heraldic arms on the obverse guard. This features a Lion with a shield. There is a folding mechanism to this hilt that works as intended. This would fold up in order to get the sword out of your way, especially while on horseback. This has a black, ribbed bakelite grip that is in very good condition. The pommel of this sword does show some wear, and finish loss to the very top tip. The black finished steel scabbard retains 98% of its original finish, there is some slight scuffing, but this is not a distraction. This is a gorgeous triple engraved 31¾ inch (80.64cm) straight blade. The reverse bears acid-etched arabesques and oak leaves, with the latter entwined with a blackened banner bearing a raised inscription of “ZUR ERINNERUNG AN MEINE DIENSTZEIT” (“In Memory of My Service Time”). The Eickhorn very early, back-to-back, squirrel logo can be seen just under the crossguard. The regiment's name can be seen on the obverse. This is accompanied by a floral etching. This design also shows a horse head in a horseshoe and a mounted soldier raising his sword. This is a gorgeous sword and a great presentation piece.
