Japanese Samurai Sword-This sword measures approx. 39” in total length, but the blade is approx. 27”.  This appears to be a very old sword, that has a signed tang, which we have provided photos of. The handle covering is made of a bamboo type material that has been painted with a black lacquer. The handle itself Is a full 10’” in length, which is longer than I typically encounter. It does have the shark skin simulated covering over the signed tang. The pommel cap is deeply engraved with an ornate stag. The tsuba is solid brass with an engraving on both the top and the bottom. The blade has a wavy temper line, the tip of the blade is in excellent condition, the blade itself has some finger spots, but otherwise nothing that is distractive. The scabbard is made of wood and has a beautifully fitted leather covering. Interestingly enough, the single ring for attaching this to a hanger is made of a zinc material and doesn’t appear to be consistent with the age of the rest of the sword, this may have been added by a veteran or collector in order to display the sword. Without sounding like it is a “sales pitch”, this may be a sleeper. Overall presentation is near excellent considering its age.   UPDATE! We have heard from a noted Japanese sword expert regarding his thoughts on this blade....

"It looks like the blade is signed Takeyama yoshi tomi. Above the signature is a Showa stamp which means the blade was made after 1926. The temper if apparent is an oil temper. If the whole outfit is tight (no movement in the handle when pin is in) then put together for Japanese officer by his choice rather than all military fittings during ww2.  The handle has antique civilian Fuchi and kashira with the handle wrapped and the binding was lacquered over to protect it.  The menuki look like nail studs. The Tsuba is soft metal with design (antique) very nice (maybe some damage in rim), nice Tsuba! The scabbard is nice with the leather complete and not major damage.  So a nice looking package from ww2 which it went to war like that and was later surrendered or captured. Don't clean anything and sell as is."
