Japanese Type 32 Cavalry Sword-The Japanese Type 32 Saber was a government-issued cavalry sword. It was first issued in 1889 (Meiji Dynasty year 32) and was produced until the end of WWII. They had been used heavily in Manchuria and China. This type sword was issued to all NCOs and enlisted men in the Cavalry.  All of the Type 32 swords were manufactured at the Tokyo Artillery Arsenal. The production of the Type 32 ended in 1936. Although the production of the sabers ended, they were never removed from the authorized equipment regulations and they remained in service through the end of the World War II.  The grip is made of a checkered wood that is quite stylized. This grip is held on with a single bolt. This example does not have the usual leather finger grip. The locking mechanism just under the steel crossguard works perfectly. The underside of the crossguard shows the maker marks, in Kanji. The steel guard, crossguard and pommel show a very light coat of rust. The scabbard is also made of steel and has the same light coat of rust that matches the rest of the steel fittings perfectly. There is a number 10699 stamped into the bottom fitting of the scabbard. The blade is near excellent. Under the crossguard is a serial number 7030. After doing some research, we learned that the lowest reported serial number is 1175 and the highest one being 83390, so this may help you with aging this blade. There are remnants of cosmoline under the crossguard. The blade measures 30 ½ inches (77.47cm) long, with the total length with the scabbard being 37 inches (93.98cm).  This is a beauty!
