Japanese WWII Type 30 Bayonet-The type 30 bayonet went through many variations as the war raged on and resources became very limited. You can tell this is an early war production since it has the hooked quillon on the crossguard, and steel birds head pommel. This bayonet also has a serial number stamped onto the top of the pommel. Both of these have lost their original finish and have toned to a nice gray steel color. The grip plates are wood, held on with two rivets. This example has no washers. The wood handles had been chipped in areas, a long time ago, but these have since been smoothed down from use. The mortise button works as intended. Another early characteristic of an early production is the steel scabbard. This one has lost its finish. The steel has toned to the same color as the upper fittings. The blade on this example is the bright example, not blued. It is in very good condition. The maker’s stamp can been seen just under the crossguard. The ”M” and arrow makers mark refers to the Matsushita National Denki or the Matsushita National Electric Co. This bayonet measures in at 21 inches (53.34cm) long, with a blade that measures approx. 15 ¾ inches (40cm) long. A desirable bayonet.
