Veteran Bring Back WWII Philippine Barong Knife-This barong is a single edged weapon that is heavily weighted. Barong blades are thick and very heavy with the weight aiding in the slicing capability of the sword. They are popular with many groups in the southern Philippines. This particular knife was brought home by a US veteran. We will supply the name to the buyer. Now, let me tell you about this particular machete. The grip is made out of banati, which is a type of wood found mostly in the Philippines. It feels light almost like a light pine or balsa wood but is strong. It is the prized material for making the hilts on Barongs and Moro swords and daggers. This one is decorated into a type of head. The usual motifs for these knives were cockatoos, or sea serpents. This may be a cockatoo (if you squint while looking at it). The handle shows wear but is in very good condition. The cockatoo has good details remaining. The scabbard is also made of banati wood, which is wrapped in 9 rings of braided rattan, that are a nice dark brown that complements the brown wooden scabbard. The leaf shaped steel blade is unmarked, and measures approx. 11 inches (27.94cm) long. The whole barong measures approx. 16 inches (40.64cm) long, and is in very good condition. This is a very interesting knife with a very interesting backstory. Again, this was brought home by a us veteran, we will supply the name of the veteran to the buyer. And of course you ask, how the heck did this soldier get a Filipino knife, well I’m sure most of you remember that the Japanese invaded the Philippines mere hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor, leading to the defeat of Filipino and American forces in the Battle of Bataan and Corregidor in 1942. This marked the beginning of a brutal three-year occupation that ended with the Allied liberation of the islands in 1945.
