French Model M-1866 “Chassepot” Sword/Bayonet-This is the most widely copied of all the sword bayonets. Many countries such as America, Egypt, Belgium, and Argentina have manufactured or used very similar bayonets to this French style. This 1866 is made to fit the Model 1866 Chassepot Rifled Infantry Musket, which was manufactured from 1866 to 1874 and would be replaced by the later Model 1874 "Gras" Bayonet. This bayonet has a gorgeous, ribbed brass hilt with a steel latching on the right side. The crossguard is also a nicely toned steel, with a color that nicely matches the steel latch. This has a screw-type tightening arrangement on the muzzle-ring. The cross guard is a hooked type, also known as a "blade-breaker". This has a serial number on the side, which reads B-89913. The blade is really cool. It has a re-curved or "yataghan-shape." This blade is very nicely marked on the backstrap, as these usually are. This script represents the arsenal, month, and year of manufacture, with this one being 1871. This script is etched in a nice engraved cursive fashion and contrary to some, these inscriptions are not the name of a lieutenant or major, nor is it a presentation date. This blade is also nicely marked under the crossguard. The tip of the blade has some discoloration and pitting. This spot of damage measures just about an inch at the tip of the blade. Please look closely at the photos to see this. The steel scabbard has lost all of its original finish but has a tone that nicely matches the bayonets crossguard and latch. It is also nicely marked with the matching serial number 89913. This set has been together for a very long time! The blade and scabbard together measure approx. 28 inches (71.12cm). This is a very scarce blade to encounter and considering that is over 150 years old is in near excellent condition, despite its few liabilities. This is really gorgeous.
