German WWI Pioneer Sawback Bayonet by Eickhorn-This is a very early dress pioneer bayonet from world war I. It has the early nickel silver fittings that are in very good condition. The mortise button works as it should. The checkered grip plates are in very good condition. The scabbard retains approx. 70% of its black finish, there is a number and what looks like it may have been a name scratched into the reverse at one point. Someone has removed this by removing approx. a 1 ½ inch (3.81cm) spot of paint on the back of the scabbard. You can still see remnants of the number 6161… but the rest has been removed. This bayonet measures 15 inches (38.1cm) long in total, with a 10 inch long (25.4cm) sawback blade. This sawback blade was intended for use by Pioneer groups, to double as a light saw, and not to inflict more damage to the enemy. This blade is very good in every way. You can see the very early back-to-back squirrel logo for the early Eickhorn company. This comes with a dark brown leather frog that I believe to be dated 1938 that shows heavy use but has been with the piece for a long time.
