You can tell by the wear to the eagle, wreath and motto that this buckle spent a lot of time in action. Take a look at the wear to the swastika, it makes me wonder if there wasn’t a strap or something constantly rubbing against the front of the buckle to allow for this angle of wear. Very interesting. This aluminum buckle has lost quite a few details to the feathers of the eagle, as well as to the top of the motto and wreath. The high points are buffed smooth. There is some finish remaining in the lowest details of the central motif, but not much is left. The pebbled field details are still strong. There is some slight finish remaining in the lowest details of the pebbling, giving this an interesting look. There is wear to the edges of the buckle, smoothing out some of this pebbling. More of the combat green original finish is in place on the reverse of the buckle. The aluminum rollbar and prongs work as they should. This is a classic wartime example of a buckle that could tell us a lot of stories if it were able to.
