The cockade is machine woven and also hand applied. The interior is fully lined in black cotton that shows only slight use. The inside is not marked at all, but this cap is small, so is size 54. This cap has a brushed aluminum device, representing an octopus entangled with a submarine, preparing to snap it in half. This is the insignia for the German submarine U-825. The U-825 was a Type VIIC U-boat of the kriegsmarine, she was commanded by Oberleutnant zur See Gerhard Stoelker. Her nickname was “The Octopus” or “Der Krake”. She survived the war and was surrendered to the allies in May 1945. She spent some time in a loch in Scotland and was later scuttled in Northern Ireland during Operation Deadlight. Following Germany's unconditional surrender in May 1945, a total of 156 U-boats surrendered to Allied forces. At the Potsdam Conference, the US, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union agreed to divide 30 advanced U-boats equally among themselves for technical testing and experimentation.
