German WWII Luftwaffe Air Gunner/Wireless Operator Badge by B&NL-This is an early example made of the combination of Tombac and other materials. Light wear to the burnishing of the eagle and nice tone to the wreath. This is a combined award for a crew member who had qualified not only as the wireless operator, but also the capability of serving as a gunner. Very nicely marked on the reverse with B&N L for Berg & Nolte Lüdenscheid. This is just about as nice as they come.
History: The Wireless Operator/Air Gunner qualification badge was introduced by Hermann Göring in March of 1936, as an award to radio operators, air gunners and mechanics who had met the required criteria. The Wireless Operator/Air Gunner badge was awarded on an individual basis and the main criteria for bestowal was the completion of five operational flights over enemy territory or a minimum of two months active service.
